Azafrán bola (Ditaxis heterantha) or "ball saffron" is not closely related to saffron but is only named after it because of its similar use as a natural yellow food dye. The waxy, deep golden orange endosperm of the fruits is used to add color and flavor to dishes in Mexican cuisine such as menudo amarillo.
