The family name change from Labiatae to Lamiaceae results from the influential work of the [[Angiosperm Phylogeny Group]], which is leading a major reorganisation of flowering plant classification based on [[phylogenetics]]. The original family name Labiatae refers to the fact that the flowers typically have petals fused into an upper lip and a lower lip (''{{lang|la|labia}}'' in Latin). In 2004, the Lamiaceae were divided into seven [[subfamilies]] with 10 genera not placed in any of the subfamilies.<ref name="harley2004"/> The [[Incertae sedis|unplaced]] genera are: ''Tectona, Callicarpa, Hymenopyramis, Petraeovitex, Peronema, Garrettia, Cymaria, Acrymia, Holocheila'', and ''Ombrocharis''.
